The UPS is chirping continuously every 2-3 seconds, and the battery indicator shows no charge left. There is not a 'replace battery' indicator, but I suspect this 5 year old battery is waving goodbye. I tried to remove the battery after pulling the cover, but it won't let go. I tried levering it on both sides to encourage it to get free but it is totally stubborn. Any ideas anyone?

The battery may be swollen due to heat. I have a few UPSs and they all run quite hot due to the design:
1. APC Smart-UPS v/s 650 - does not have ventilation holes. I recently had to take it completely apart to remove a swollen battery (CSB GPL12120 - so not a cheap one). Does not report its temperature.
2. APC Smart-UPS 700 (a bit newer than the 650) - has ventilation holes near he transformer, but no fan - internal temperature is about 45C.
3. APC Smart-UPS 2200 - has a fan, but it is only on when the batteries are charging or discharging. Internal temperature 40C when idle, 28C with the fan on (charging/discharging).
You will probably need to take the PS apart, like I did with my 650 - assuming the warranty has expired.

Battery backups get warm the smart upses are for server rooms that have 68-70 degree air, if the batteries swell that means there is a lack of maintaining the upses, its a box of batteries. you should be inspecting them at-least every 2 weeks

No, the battery isn't warm. I can remove the connection nearest the opening only.

Does the battery appear to be swollen and/or warm to the touch? Are you able to disconnect the battery from the UPS(red/black wire)?
