Back-UPS XS 1200 replacement battery

I have a 6 year old Back-UPS XS 1200 in need of battery replacement. I believe I need an RBC32 but I am not 100% sure if this is right. I removed the battery that’s already installed and there was no “RBC32” or similar identifying information anywhere. UPC sticker had OM-1332 over a JB serial number. The battery measures 5.875” x 2.5” x 7.75 “ and these are also the same dimensions for the RBC33 battery.

APC’s battery finder chart did not specifically list my APC model number but it suggested the RBC32. Can somebody please confirm before I make an expensive non-returnable purchase that I do indeed need an RBC32 for my Back-UPS XS 1200?

I’m going to order the RBC32. After many hours of research I found a product photo of the battery cartridge replacement instructions that come with the RBC32 replacement battery that clearly indicates the Back-UPS XS 1200 as one of the UPS units that the RBC32 is designed for.

I’m still baffled as to why there is no indication whatsoever as to the type of battery that my UPS came with even after physically removing the battery and looking at all six sides on it for information.

Hi Davis,

If this is your UPS > [BX1200|http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BX1200] then it is the RBC32 battery that you need to order.

R2, The full model is Back-UPS XS 1200. Is there a reason that you would need the serial number in addition to the full model number? The serial number has personal identification information when the UPS was registered 6 years ago and I prefer not to publish that information.

The UPS is 6 years old with the original battery. Its always been run at about 290 watts out of 780 max.

Hi Davis, the "back-ups xs 1200" is the family name for the UPS but the full model number for it. On the white sticker on the bottom of the unit there should be 2 numbers printed (1 being the model and the other being the serial). The model number for instance should be something like bx1200lcd or bx1200g (both of these units would say back-ups xs on them, but are in fact very different units). As for the serial number, I just wanted to determine how old this UPS was, not require by any means to determine the correct battery.

I installed a clearly labeled RBC32 battery in my Back-UPS XS 1200 and it has been running flawlessly for almost a week. The original battery was NOT clearly labeled or otherwise identifiable. The original documentation that came with the unit referenced an RBC33 battery which was incorrect. After many frustrating hours of inconclusive research I remain uncertain as to what the exact difference is between the RBC32 and the RBC33 batteries other than the designation number.

The Battery Cartridge Replacement Guide that came with the replacement battery clearly indicates for Back-UPS RS/XS/NS/HT 1000, 1050, 1200, 1250 (RBC32), 1000-IN and 1500 (RBC33). Hopefully this information will be of use to others.

Original batteries that came with the unit wouldn't have any label on it that would identify what kind of battery is it. Nonetheless, we are happy to know that you got it working.

It seems to be working ok but it failed a self scheduled self-test the other day. Shutting it off and on cleared the red LED and I’m starting to lose confidence in this particular unit’s protection functionality. A 5 year old battery I can see in need of replacing but the entire UPS should last at least a couple battery change outs before needing to be replaced.

Did it dropped the load on the last self-test? This could be hiccup that you UPS has experienced. Let us keep an eye on the UPS and see if this would occur again. Our UPS performs a self-test every 2 weeks from the last time that it ran it.

I have run several manual self tests and it will pass one time and then fail another. Since and prior to the recent new battery installation it does switch with power fluctuations like a momentary brownout during a storm, without having the red LED in front go on and my computer and other connected equipment stays on. The failure of the first automatic self test concerns me but I will need to see what happens over the next several weeks.

After 5 years with the original battery I can understand battery replacement but the self test failures with the new battery (automatic and manual) baffle me. I should add that in 5 years the unit has never been turned off except to replace the battery. It does get slightly warm to the touch when connected equipment to it has been running a while but it is cool if nothing connected to it has been running. The Performance screen says "your battery backup is providing 249 Watts of power. You can connect more equipment to your battery backup." It maxes out at 780 Watts. I have it set to the High sensitivity and voltages above 136 volts and below 104 volts. Runtime will shutdwon the PC when there is less than 5 minutes to keep the PC on as long as possible.

If this unit is now defective I hate to think about having to buy another UPS to replace this one after just having spent $75 on a replacement battery as these devices should last longer than 5 years. Maybe its just a glitch and/or my settings are too tight?
