Hi there,
- I purchased a Back-UPS RS 600 in Nov 2010.
- I have only connected an extension/spike strip to it which is connected to my DSL modem and cordless phone. There is nothing else connected to it.
- During the first five to six months, I used to get around 15 mins backup time in this configuration. I felt this was on the lower side given that it is advertised to provide 15 mins backup to a computer + LCD monitor which should be drawing more power than a modem and phone. However, this was acceptable.
- Recently, during power cuts, I've noticed that I'm only getting around 2 mins of backup time. After this, the UPS cuts the output power, switches off the green light and gives a long beep every 5 secs or so for a little while and then completely shuts down. I've allowed it to charge for 8-10 hours but it still does the same thing.
- Is the battery dying already? This is a huge disappointment. I believed it was supposed to last 3-5 years as per APC claims.
- I don't think this is one of those smart UPSs which have software diagnosis tools, so am not sure as to what's wrong here or how to fix it.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks.

You should be able to install software to check the runtime. You didn't indicate the exact model # but based on the description as an RS 600, you can install powerchute personal addition and use the usb cable supplied with the UPS If this runtime does indicate a problem(if it's very low), it may indicate the battery is dying sooner than expected. In that case, tech support MAY be willing to send you a battery. Generally speaking, we don't usually do this unless the battery actually fails a self test, but personally I would say if the runtime is significantly lower than it should, it may be warranted to get a new battery but that is up to tech support.
