I have 2 old back ups pro 650 units that have been in storage for several years. Obviously, the batteries are dead...really dead. I plugged the units in and neither one did anything - no lights, no beeps ... nada. I removed one of the batteries and the voltage was .34VDC. Like I said, really dead. Question is this: should the unit light up, do something, tell me the battery is bad under that low of battery condition? Before I invest in a rather pricey new battery, I'd kind of like the heads up if it's worth it. Please don't offer me the tradeup option. I have the legal limit of backups my state will allow (j/k) and will just send them for recycling if they are seriously hosed. The unit being totally dead, is there a chance a new battery will get it to work? Also, I've come across many products that the circuit breaker goes bad. Is this a possibility as well? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Kinney,
I recommend you to purchase an APC AV product to protect your Audio-Video equipment from harmful surges. H Type Power Conditioners provide guaranteed protection against damaging surges and spikes while eliminating power as a source of audio-video signal degradation. The S Type Power Conditioners with Battery Backup not only offer both of these benefits, but also battery backup power to prevent interruptions, lost DVR/multi-media server data, lost pre-sets and premature projector bulb wear and tear when the power goes out.

Jeff,
I have seen in some cases that this unit will not come on if the battery is completely dead. You may try replacing the battery in any one of the two units to see if it fixes the issue. If it does, then you can check the second unit to see if it powers up with the new battery. Please make sure that the Battery supplier will accept the return if the battery does not fix the issue. Secondly, I can not guarantee you that the battery replacement will fix the issue in case if the unit had some issues with its PCB.

I grabbed a 33AH AGM battery I had laying around and clipped it to the battery terminals and it fired right up. Went through it's normal startup routine and then latched onto the mains, so I am assuming the unit itself is ok. Haven't tried the other one, but am guessing it's the same thing. Thanks for the tip on making sure the battery place takes them back. They actually suggested I bring the unit in and they could try the battery out before I even purchased it.
These older units with the big transformers were incredible workhorses. One project I was on several years back dissected one of these units and hooked it into a deep cycle marine battery and ran some remote scientific monitoring equipment along with a video camera and vcr 24/7 for almost a year straight. They would keep a deep cycle on charge and swap them out. Once the project was finished, the original battery was put back in and it chugged along for years as a backup for an Apple Mac.
Thanks for the help. I look foward to these 2 units working for many more years to come.

You are welcome Jeff!
I recommend you to replace the battery with same AH battery. APC recommends to replace the battery with a genuine APC RBC battery. My advice for you is that please do not connect the UPS to higher AH battery because it may cause some issues to the circuit. The UPS is designed to charge the battery which came with it.
I hope that this helps.

Got a "suitable replacement" battery and it's working great. Gave it time to charge and then gave it a run test. Almost 2hrs runtime with a 32" flat-panel TV, cable HD box and digital audio decoder. It's now happily living behind our TV. We have frequent power dips/outages and it wipes out the cable HD box programming and the audio decoder always has to be reset. I put it ahead of a Philips A/V power center and audio is hum-free on the TV.
Is there a software way to kill the beeper on this unit? I'll go through the trouble of making up a cable if it can be done, otherwise I'll just install a switch in the back - no warranty to worry about voiding.
Even though it's a boat anchor, I'm very happy to have this back in service and should provide many more years of service. APC in my opinion has always made the best backups in the industry.

I am Glad that your UPS is working fine.
I assume that you would like to disable the UPS battery backup alarms. You may try using the Power Chute Business Edition software in order to disable the battery backup alarms(4 beeps every 30 seconds). However, I have not tried this software to disable the battery backup alarms of this unit through the PCBE software. So I can not give a guarantee on this. The UPS's serial cable part number is 940-0024. You need to connect the 940-0024 in order for the PCBE software to detect the UPS.
I hope that this helps.

I'm interested in a UPS system to protect my A/V, TV, etc. in the same way as Hyperlinear. He said he has a 32" flat-panel TV, cable HD box and digital audio decoder, and that he has frequent power dips/outages and it wipes out the cable HD box programming and the audio decoder always has to be reset.
My equipment is similar (I have a Samsung 52" LCD, rather than a 32"), with a HD cable box, a Blu-ray play, a combination DVD/VCR recorder, and a Bose surround sound set up. When I went to the APC website, it recommended a UPS system costing about $500.00, but that is a little pricey. All I want is something simple with a surge protector to protect my system in case of a power surge. And, I only want a battery big enough for when the power shuts off for a few seconds, which would take care of probably 95% of the power outages that occur. This way my settings are protected, just as Hyperlinear said in the message he posted.
I have had about three or four APC UPS systems for my computers systems in the past 10 years, and I really like APC. But I really don't want to spend $500 for something to protect my A/V, TV, etc. What can you recommend?
