Back-UPS ES 750 Spontaneous Shutdown with Neverending Beep
Hi I bought a Windows 7 SONY VAIO all-in-one computer a month ago to replace an aging Windows XP Dell Dimension desktop. I kept my APC Back-UPS ES 750 to use for the new computer. It was working fine for several weeks with the latest verison of Powerchute installed and plenty of battery time left.
Then in the past week, all of the sudden my computer shut down in a flash and the UPS had a neverending beep along with the power LED light turning off with my house's power working fine. Upon re-booting the computer, the Powechute software showed no indication (in its log) that this abnormal event occured. I thought it was an anomoly so I continued using the UPS only to have the same incident happen again a few days later.
Just some other background information. I've had the UPS for four years and never had a shutoff with the neverending beep on my old Dell. My new system only has two plugs in the battery backup+surge protection outlets, nothing else (computer in the master outlet and printer). The other six outlets were empty. Also, the power plug from my SONY all-in-one as well as the printer are both simple two pronged plugs. Both plugs felt very secure in the UPS and were not loose at all.
That beep continued indefinitely until I held down a power button and then it stopped.
What does it mean when the beep is not only continuous, but it is also neverending without the user intervening? Neither the manual nor the chat support specialist can shed any light on this phenomena.
I'm not sure if a simple battery replacemenet would solve this issue that happens spontaneously. I could get a battery but it would provide me no guarantee the problem would be fixed. Should I just get a new unit? If so, what would be a better model since I now have a much more power efficient all-in-one and I don't need eight outlets?
