I just bought a BS 900 for my HDTV and cable box. After charging the battery for 18 hours and plugging in the equipment, I pulled the AC plug from the XS 900 input source and the battery powered the equipment for about 5 seconds and then shut down. This is not right. The equipment plugged into the unit to run off battery is approximately 270 watts, roughly a half load. The TV is 240 watts and the cable box about 25-30 watts
When I look at PowerChute is says the load is 248 watts and has 13 minutes of battery time.
If I take the TV off of the UPS and then unplug the source input the battery does stay on. It is only with the 240 watt TV pugged in that it shuts down shortly after it goes to backup.

Thanks,
I exchanged the unit and the new one works fine. I actually don't care to power the HDTV from and UPS. My goal was twofold; 1) I live in Florida and during the rainy season we have a lot or short power outages and power surges. I wanted some extra protection for the new TV beyond what a standard surge protector offers. 2) The cable box has to reboot when power goes off. 98% of the outages are a few seconds and 1% more are less than 5 minutes. I tried to size the UPS for this 99% or the problem.
All seems well with the new one. I ran the TV and cable box for 13 minutes off the battery last night.
Thanks

I did some more testing. With only the cable box(about 23-30 watts) plugged in I pulled the plug on the input AC to the BX900. The batteries power that unit for about 90 seconds and then shut down. What happened next is even more alarming. When I plugged the AC in again the yellow light came on, the green light did not, power resumed to the cable box and then the power to the cable box starting recycling on and then off. The yellow battery light went on and off too with these cycles. After about 5 times I shut it off and power back up and the green light came on and it seems to be normal.
These power cycles are about the worst thing you can do to electronics. Needless to say I have about 4 hours of weekend time into something that I should be able to plug in and run without ever reading any instructions.

With regards to an HDTV being powered by a Back-UPS, I will only say that there is an APC line of A/V UPS's and surge filterers which do more than just a BX900R can for your equipment.
However, pertaining to your second setup, it seems that there is an inrush current upon transfer to battery and the load is increasing, which is decreasing the runtime, causing less than desired runtime from the UPS.
As far as plugging in only a 30W load and it powering off after 90 seconds, that's normal. APC Back-UPS are designed to have at least a load of 50W attached to the UPS, or it sense that it's not really powering anything while on battery, and will eventually turn itself off. If you're looking to power small watt consuming devices on battery, you're going to look at Smart-UPS for that.
