I have a RS1500 workstation ups (BX1500) that is about 5 years old. It has been working great until recently when we had a thunderstorm and it stopped working and shut down. When i tried to power it up it basically goes immediately into overload even with no load at all. If i power it up without the batteries connected however it seems to work. I have looked at the device and it seems that there are no burnt traces or anything obvious that is wrong. Also the batteries are holding around 27 volts worth of charge so they appear to be ok. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be?

are any other LEDs on at this time the overload LED is flashing, such as online? if not, this is indeed a fault condition. you can try braindeading the UPS to clear it but if it comes back, it will need to be replaced.
to braindead the UPS:
• turn off and unplug any load
• remove any USB data cables
• turn off UPS
• remove UPS from AC power
• disconnect the UPS battery
• hold down the power button for 10 seconds
• reconnect the battery
• reconnected your load
• reconnect UPS to AC power
• turn on UPS
• turn on your attached load
