BK650MC failure or battery

I have a BK650MC and when I push the test button it goes dead on the battery backup side. No other indication the battery is bad or low, no beeps, etc. It would seem if the battery is failing I should be getting a low battery indication. I notice the problem as intermittently when the computer would backup to a USB drive daily it would just shut off. The only items on the backup are the computer monitor and the external USB drive. Do I have a bad battery or a bad unit, any test to verify before I invest in a new battery. The unit is about 3 years old.
Any input is appreciated.

I have done the power cord test and it fails, should have said that. I have now tested the battery and it is about 8 volts which indicates severe failure, I have now replace it (after obtaining a 1 week agreement to return it if for some reason the unit has an issue). Also, you asked about software, I only run the windows default which provides the hibernation and shut down of the computer that is needed on this unit belonging to my CPA, additional functionality wouldn't do her much good, although it would allow me more information on the functionality now I am resolving the issue. I should probably rephase the question to shouldn't she be getting a low battery beep or some sort of audible notice from the unit rather than random shut downs?

It is possible that the software is configured so that there are no audible tones, either during the time in which you are doing the testing, or at all times. Check your software settings to see what the UPS is setup to do as far as notification. When on battery, you should get 4 beeps every 30 seconds.

The change battery indication is not very reliable. The conditions you describe is consistent with heavily degraded battery pack. To test the battery, UPS goes to battery, but with severely degraded battery, the voltage collapses so abruptly that it basically acts the same as trying to run the test with the battery disconnected.

Can you post the serial #? I can then tell you how old it is. There's no way the unit is only 3 years old. I think your unit is closer to a decade old. If I recall correctly, APC discont'd that style of UPS in late 90s/early 00s. I'd say return the battery and buy a new BE750BB unit. The BE750BB uses the same battery and have roughly the same performance.
