Hello I am having an issue with some BH500NET units that we purchased for our wiring closets on campus. I have found that I am unable to set a static IP address on the units. I get a message that says "This is not a valid IP address for this network segment. Please type enter a valid address that is not currently in use." The network is running on a 10.10.0.1-10.10.0.255 range and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. It rejects every IP address that I enter. I have tried from both a Windows 2003 server and a Windows 7 machine using the most current utility (which appears to be 6+ years old). Has anyone run into this issue before? Is there any other way to set the IP address? Thank You

An old thread, but the problem still exists and the product is still shipping.
I've put together a simple Bash script that can set the IP and hostname, and I've also extended abagayev's control script to provide command line reporting of UPS status - runtime, status, etc.
Scripts and more info on my site here. This is a fully functional network connected UPS for less than £100 with these simple scripts 🙂

can you provide us the specific IPs you tried? from what i understand, it does not let you adjust the default gateway or subnet mask (since it requires you to be on the same segment).
what IP are you configuring it from?

I was configuring from a DHCP address in that scope. I don't have my machine on that segment anymore so I could not tell you the specific IP that I had.
The BH500 also has a DHCP address in that scope. The address it had yesterday was 10.10.0.16. It rejected the address that I wanted to give it (10.10.0.187) as well as 10.10.0.18, 10.10.0.20, 10.10.0.25 10.10.0.100, etc. None of those addresses are taken in the range, as the range is only available on a handful of ports in our infrastructure and everything that is on that segment is assigned a static IP. The addresses I am trying to assign do not require a change in subnet or gateway.

hmm ok. i asked around about this..
it was suggested to push the RESET button on the front of the unit, under the cover..this should cause the unit to refresh the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. not sure if you tried that yet.
can you reach the BH500NET on the network when it was given a DHCP address no problem? It's default to DHCP, so the unit should have grabbed something as soon as it was installed which i guess it did apparently. also, based on what you said, the 10.10.0.16 was a valid IP/subnet range for your scope.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but the result was the same.
Interestingly enough, I thought it would reset the unit to factory defaults, but it did not. It still had the same Name that I had assigned it after the reset.
I can reach the BH500NET from the DHCP address it's given using Internet Explorer. I just cannot assign it any address other than the one it gets via DHCP.
I have a second unit that I have not opened yet, but I probably will not have time this week to get that out and test it.

Were you ever able to look into this issue?

i apologize for not posting back.
i mostly work with our UPS Network Management Cards and we have a similar utility to assign IPs over the networks to certain devices. it is a completely different program but we recently had to update it for use with Windows 7 because of the way the ping response works, compared to older OSs. as you mentioned, this utility is very old too so i am wondering if it is a similar issue.
have you tried this or can you try this from something like windows XP or an older OS other than Windows 7 or Windows Vista?
our BH500NET is an early production model and seems to be finicky in accepting the IP address from previous experience so if you cannot try that, i will proceed with resetting ours and hoping it allows me to assign an IP. i'll try it from windows 7.

did some more asking around with someone who actually has set it up before..
The best way to do this is to connect a computer directly to the BH500NET with a crossover cable. Make sure the computer has the default gateway and subnet mask that you want to BH500NET to get and then ensure all firewalls, etc are off on the computer. Then, reset the BH500NET and assign the IP using that computer. After you verify the BH500NET has the correct static IP, unplug the computer from it and connect it to the network.

Thanks! I'll give it a try tomorrow or Friday. I will try and dig up a Windows XP laptop to try it with as well.

I have a BH500NET here at home and had the same issue. Looking through the forum found this thread.
My Configuration:
OS: Windows 7
IP of UPS: 192.168.0.104 (DHCP)
GW: 192.168.0.1 (The Usual)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Running the APC Back-UPS HS application on Windows 7 will not work in normal mode. I assume you know how to do this already but for anyone else who finds this thread.
-Right Click on the Shortcut for the app and click on Properties
-Click on Compatibility tab
-In the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" drop-down click on Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
-I also checked the "Run this program as an administrator" box
-Click OK
when running this way it was able to change the IP to my desired address.
Hope this helps...
Peace,
