BE750G Randomly Drops Communication with PC. Event Log Posted

I purchased a BE750G last week, and it has been working beautifully except for the fact that it will randomly drop communication with the PC for a few seconds at a time. I dont have to be anywhere near the PC for it to drop communication. I could be laying in my bed, staring at my monitor, and the bubble will randomly pop up saying it can't connect with the battery backup. And I really mean randomly. I could be surfing the web, watching a video, doing nothing, and the bubble with sound pops up. Has nothing to do with sleep mode or anything since I have that all disabled, and it whether I am on the pc or just let it idle, it just happens. It gets very annoying since every time that error comes up, it also plays the windows default sound. I have spoken to tech support and they have shipped me a new USB to RJ-45 cable (still on route to my house) which may be the problem, but what if the problem still persists even with the new cable? Could it be anything else? Here is a copy of my even log. The long gaps of time where you don't see the error, is when my PC is turned off. Thank you all in advance.

If it is not the cable, we can reload the Human Interface Device drivers or try a different USB port. Most of the time in this situation, it is something to do with the cable and the software. Are you at the most up to date PowerChute Personal Edition?

Reinstallation of every single motherboard/chipset/USB/HID driver came up with same result 😞 Could EMI be a culprit maybe? (Just a crazy thought) I have a small subwoofer next to it if it matters, but if that were the cause of disturbance, I would think it'd give a problem all the time and not at crazy random moments.. Any other ideas?

EDIT: Moving away from subwoofer made no difference.

One thing to note is that when it looses communication, it makes the usual windows sound "Windows XP Exclamation.wav" (because of the error/message) plus the balloon in the lower right corner of the screen but I do NOT get a "Windows XP Hardware Remove.wav" Hardware disconnect/reconnect sound.

Now, if I physically disconnect the data cable, I get the usual sound "Windows XP Exclamation.wav" because of the error/message, plus I get the balloon, AND I get the "Windows XP Hardware Remove.wav" Hardware Disconnect sound, the way it should be if it were a data cable fault. We clearly know it's not a cable problem since I just installed a new one with same result.

The reason I mention the sounds is because, every time I get the random error message, windows does not see it as the device being disconnected then reconnected. According to Windows, the UPS is there 100% of the time and doesnt do the remove/add hardware sound. It seems to be only the software itself (PowerChute) that seems to be loosing communication with the UPS for some reason. I'm really thinking it's software related, and HOPING it's not the UPS device itself.

If it matters any, The device passes all self tests, and the battery outlets are providing an avarage of 160-180 Watts of power, so overload is out of the question 🙂 Whether "Enable data collection" is checked or unchecked, same thing. I also tried turning off/unchecking (Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power) for the USB ports with same result. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the software from the CD with no luck. I even downloaded the 2.0 version from this website, and STILL no luck 😞 Just trying as many things as possible.

Here's some more of the event log... I cut out what I already posted earlier and only added the newer events. I cant see a pattern anywhere... Maybe you can tell that this pop up and sound can get very annoying 🙂

New cable = no luck. I have tried different USB ports on my pc with no success. 😞 I'm using the software that came with the product (PowerChute PE 2.0 CD) Has this happened to anyone before? Maybe it could be a conflict with some software maybe? I'm not sure at all, but I do know that I don't have any problems with any other usb devices. I am using the USB ports directly on the motherboard. I've also unplugged ALL usb devices except for the UPS and no change (I only have a mouse and inkjet printer plugged in anyway..harmless) I have also attempted to use the front usb ports and still get the same randomness. I'm going to see if I can update my USB controller drivers. My system is a Windows XP Home Edition SP2, Athlon XP 2800+, 1 GB ram, 2x 80GB WD hard drives, nForce2 chipset, 6 USB 2.0 ports. I'll post back with results of driver change/reinstall. If you have any other thoughts, please let me know 🙂 Thank you for your help so far.

It sounds like the culprit is either some conflicting software on the cpu, or the data port itself on the UPS.

Do you have another UPS or CPU to try and rule out either option? You may want to consider calling into our Tech Support, because there could be an issue with the UPS Data Port and that would require an in warranty replacement.

I'm going to try a clean OS install on a different hard drive first to see if it makes a difference to rule out if any of my installed software could be causing a problem. I just bought 2 of these for 2 PC's in our office and I am have the same issues.

Both computers are relatively new (< 1 year) and have no difficulty with other USB devices.

I to am having the same issues Update I did a self test and now I am not getting the unable to communicate with APC error it is gone away no more yellow popups so what I did i do not really know hope it is fixed for good really like this new g 750 Model sleek and with new watt feature is cool.New update i spoke to soon they are just farther apart know but I am still getting the alerts.

I have reverted back to the native power management in vista and have no usb communication problems so is it the software or just a fluke I am not sure at this point. i couldn't take the pop -ups from the software so now I took care of it but the shut down procedure is not as good with Vista as with APC software.e. I am waiting for a new cable from APC that the rep is sending me but I didn't want to burst his bubble and tell him which if he read my e-mail he would of seen that i tried a different cable i think I want the BB I have tow of these and not a problem for years.

Been watching this thread with some interest, as I have been experiencing the same problem. Running Microsoft XP Professional with 2.5 RAM. Thus far have:
1. Replaced USB cable X 2; resulting in no fix.
2. RMA of a new BE750G unit from APC, resulting in no fix.

Currently waiting on a BE750BB (currently back-ordered) to see if this will remedy the intermittent, momentary communication losses. My hunch is that it is a software issue. APC tech support has been teriffic, Rhode Island shipping dept. less so.

Tried a Cyber Power unit yesterday, just for comparison. No communication issues, but I did not like their software limitations.

Please let me know how things develop for you.

Its been 5 days and no new APC or even a tracking number sent them a e-mail no reply so far but i am sure i will get some kind of a reply soon and will let you know of the results. I have another system with the 725 model and another with the 750BB model and my Brother -in-Law has a 750BB model plus I have a 350 model hooked to my model and router. The tower is the only thing hooked to the 750G model the other stuff is hooked to a monster cable power conditioner. Here is the latest from APC

I also have a BE750G. I have owned this about 3 weeks and have been just shutting down the sound to avoid the irritating windows error sound.
As its Saturday, ( the only time I have to do this kind of stuff) I will be calling APC customer support on Monday to see what the next step might be.

I seem to be a bit ahead of the curve, compared to you others afflicted with this issue, in terms of having a promise date of March 5 to 7 for the delivery of the BE750BB unit. I'll post what the results are as soon as I have that unit on line. I'd gladly give up the 2 additional ac outlets on the G model to have stable communication between the unit and my pc. I experience the communication error most frequently when accessing additional applications from one currently running application, though this is not the only time it occurs. I'm hypothesizing that perhaps the Powerchute software is very voltage sensitive, though I have disabled USB power saving options in the Device Manager......

I too have attenuated down the volume, as the sound is irritating.

They told me no BB units and the G units are not in stock I was told Saturday it would be 2-3 days and its going to be overnighted to my location I just hope the new G model doesn't have the same problem as the old one I will be sending back to them. Like I told the rep how come the native vista back-up software doesn't have the usb problem he didn't have an answer for that question. Good luck to all with this problem.

I just received my new unit today (03/03/08) about 25 min ago, I'm running on it now... No pop ups so far... We'll see what happens. This one came with 99% charge full and was manufactured 12/07 (Just thought I'd throw that in)

I got mine to and I am afraid to plug it in I am going to let it charge the amount of time required before putting it on line. Ha who is paying for the shipping i thought APC was responsible to ship these thing is a couple bucks especially if I have to ship two back. ARRGGH!!!! No, it's NOT 'Talk Like a Pirate Day". It IS " APC NOT doing what it promised to day". Latest word: No BE750BB's available, no availability date provided, just "please wait". Wondering if this issue may have something to do with the units being manufactured in the Phillipines, web search seems to indicate this as a possibility.

Is this experienced only WITH Powerchute and the UPS. Am I correct in assuming that Native, when configured, is working fine with no communication loss?

I would like to grab a 750 from our RMA facility and test it out for the 8 hours a day I'm at work, and see how often this happens.

The first one I had was every 8 t0 12 minutes but the native Power management in Vista didn't report any USB porblems and with the second one they are not as often but still happening ever 1 to 2 hours then maybe 4 hours apart but I have the chime turned off and it seems like it is happening more than that by my eye when I am sitting at the system. I still say it is some thing with the software with this new Model. (added info)Now I have put the notification beeps back on and according to the Windows logs the last time it lost USB connection was 3-10-08 9:18PM before that it was every 1-2 hours like i stated the only thing different I did was put my zip code in and enable logging.

Have you experienced the same problem after re-installing the USB drivers for the system? Or even using Native?

It's tough to make sense of a problem software or UPS related, when it works fine with Native, and doesn't work with PCPE, on two different platforms.

Just got an e-mail that the 750 R and BB are phased out and I am offered these models which are better BR800BLK or BR900 models what a run around i am getting. Went with the BR800BLK because of the color white doesn't go with the rest of components and I said I hope i see it in my house is a day or two hope everybody else with this problem gets things worked out .

Consistent problem for me. Your tech support guy in the Phillipines, Arthur Lanez (very capable, responsive) has walked me through a number of installation schemes over the phone in the last month and a half. You might check directly with him for his data files on this. Always the same result: continued intermittent (HA! There it goes again!!! 3 times in the course of reading your email and typing a response.)

She got the RS800 as a replacement for the out of stock 750BB.

Please note that we will NOT be RMA'ing an RS800 for a 750G that is not working with the software. If it is causing intermittent communication with the SOFTWARE, but not Native, there is not a problem on the UPS end of things.

Good Evening Kevin,

Been away for a few days, and upon return hoped to have heard from APC regarding what is to be done about my unit. As I previously posted in response to your query, the lost communication occurs consistently, both in Native and under Powerchute.

Happy that someone has received satisfaction from APC (Christy), though I am disappointed that things have not been remedied for me. It has been since Jan 23, 2008 that I first reported this problem, and I still do not have a glitch-free unit.........Seems a bit long to wait, does it not?.

I have been promised resolution at least 3 times, always politely, as below, that I received on March 5:
"Roy, I sincerely apologize for the inconvience caused. I am really sorry to say that this order is back ordered, so I request you to kindly wait for some time. Once the unit is available in stock I assure you I will be sending you the replacement unit."

However, politeness and promises only go so far...what I really desire is a unit that functions as it should, without the "lost communication" glitch.

What is APC doing to remedy my problem, please?

cathudog came about when I was thinking of a user name and lying on the bed with a cat on one side me human in middle and dog on my right side so it came about cathudog and that is that story and I hope and pray for Roy to get some satisfaction for he is dealing with his problem longer than I have been and should get the same unit if that is alright with him.

Here's what I get when trying to use addy book from message boards:
500 /addressbook.jsp:20: can't open include of `include/global.jspf'. `/opt/j2ee/domains/apc.com/forums/resin/webapps/ROOT/include/global.jspf' does not exist.

If you will please just send me an addy where I can forward the RMA number, I would be appreciative........

Did you try compose message and just put NK user name in the to line and it should work I think but not sure it asks for user name
