When I do not use the PC for some hours, then there is a balloon near the task bar that says "cannot communicate with the battery backup":. But when I open Parachute Personal it shows that everythng is ok with 45 minutes of battery time left. I have a new
Core 2 Duo with windows vista. I am using the usb cable that came with the BE500R and it is securely fastened. My power management settings in windows vista are set to "recommended".

Hey Ken,
Are you noticing if this is unique to when the computer goes to sleep mode or any other state?

I'm sure that it happens in sleep mode, but not sure if it also happened in display off mode. I am going to set the PC not to go into sleep mode and see if this fixes the problem.

I set the PC to never go into sleep mode and it seems to be ok now. I guess I was confused about whether it was in sleep mode or display off mode because HP set it at the factory to go into sleep mode after only 20 minutes.

Ok great..
What I've seen happen is the USB host controllers will actually "sleep".. which causes that lost comm. There is a feature that I knew of called "selective suspend" that you could disable via some registry key changes.
If you go to microsoft kbase and search "disable selective suspend" you can probably find those instructions. This will stop the USB ports from sleeping and dropping communication.
If you can't find the instructions for your particular OS, you may want to try calling your computer manufacturer or microsoft for some help there.
