Hello Folks,
Anyone have any idea on when APC will be releasing an updated version of Power Chute Personal Edition that will support Leopard 10.5.2?
Regards,
Jim

Hi jferreira@daassnet.com, could you specify which version of powerchute you are using? (version number as well) thanks.

Just curious if anyone has figured out this problem. I have a Mac Pro running 10.5.6. I have an APC 550 solely for the purpose of safely shutting down the computer in the event of a power failure. I have set it to auto shut down at 75% power, and my computer recognizes the UPS, but when I unplug it from the wall, nothing happens.....the battery just drains.

I'm having the exact same issue with OS 10.4.11 on multiple machines. My energy settings are set to never go to sleep. The UPS settings are to shut down after 1 minute in both the Mac OS & in the PowerChute software. When I unplug the UPS unit from the wall it does not shut down. It only drains the battery. I've tested it from the login screen but not when actually logged in as a user. It shouldn't matter should it?

It is sad to see that APC doesn't provide any software for Leopard. They are right in telling us that there Mac OS X version of Powerchute is obsolete since everything is included in the power settings of Leopard.
But if you compare the OS X version to the Windows version of this software, you will see that Powerchute is more than just "in case of power failure shot down the computer" it also provide information about the UPS.
I ask the support and got the reply that i should check APCUPSd (an open source project), but they doesn't support my RS BR800i.
The 130Euro APCTracker (which is only a GUI for APCUPSd) also doesn't support my UPS. And finally NUT (Network UPS Tools), which also doesn't support my UPS.
So there is no chance for me to get any information about my UPS, except if I use an virtual machine with Windows.... which would be even more expensive then the APCTracker (I would have to get a Windows license first).
Even if APC doesn't want to spend much time in developing their own software, they could give all the necessary information to a project like APCUPSd and give them some money. I think that would also be a boost for the customer satisfaction.

I am wondering this too. I just installed a BR1500.
Although my question is more general: What am I missing by not having this software? What exactly does it 'read' from the back-up?
I suppose I will get around to installing a Tiger volume eventually. Am I correct that the new version 1.3.4 works with Intel Macs in Tiger? (10.4.11)
thanks, steve

When Apple released native UPS support back in the early days of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4, the need to run PowerChute Personal Edition in its current form effectively ended.
You will notice that as soon as your APC UPS is connected via USB to your Mac running Tiger or Leopard, the UPS is detected. You should have a UPS status icon up next to the clock near the Spotlight icon (top right).
If you go to the Energy Saver System Preference Pane, you will now have a drop down called "Settings for: UPS".
In that drop down, you can set specific preferences for how the system manages its energy use when the UPS is present. There is also an option tab that will show what UPS your Mac has identified as well as its present battery charge in percent with a visual graph.
You can set graceful shutdown to occur based on the duration of the on-battery event (outage).
At this time, APC doesn't have a public time line for additional Mac OS X support beyond what your Mac already provides.

Is it true that the native support completely replaces PowerChute? For instance, I see no way to check a log of power events.
Most importantly, I don't see how I can have the system restart automatically after a power outage.
There is a checkbox in the energy saver dialog, but with the UPS shutting down normally when it drops to 25% or below, the system won't restart on its own will it? It won't "sense" this as a power outage, it will be a normal shutdown.
Am I missing something here? If I cannot have a graceful close then restart when power returns, then I will need to return this hardware and get a piece of hardware that does this properly.

No UPS can provide a turn on command. It's within the BIOS settings as to whether or not the system boots back up, after the UPS goes back online, and the Power Supply is set to on. The one problem here is that if the UPS doesn't complete its shutdown, and utility power is restored to it (e.g. the machine just shuts down and continues to run on battery), you're going to have to hard power cycle the UPS, or physically turn on the system. There's no way around that.

Are you currently running Leopard 10.5.4? If so do you have an APC connected via USB? If so have you done any testing, i.e. unplugging your APC while your Mac is running and then see if it does a proper shutdown, using the internal USB settings on your Mac?
I've done all this extensively and in my case no test that I have performed to date will work. I'd be interested and grateful in having some of you folks run some tests to see if it works on your systems and report your findings.
Does my APC turn on to battery power and continue to power my system, yes it does, but my Mac Pro, will NOT shutdown, no matter what settings I have selected using the internal energy saver APC settings!

It works for me -- an iMac G5 on 10.5.4. Gives a (single) warning message when power fails, saying to close apps, etc. Battery level reported in System Preferences as expected. Then it did an apparently-controlled shutdown at 95% power (just to test). Powered-up ok with the power button.
There was a message in the System.log about shutting down due to power loss.
I'd prefer the PowerChute handling I saw when on Panther -- repeated messages, each with an estimate of how much time remains, but at least I did get the first message, and an auto-shutdown.

Thanks for your reply. Would you mind posting what settings you have selected in your energy saver functions APC section? Did you unplug your APC from the wall while connected with a USB to your Imac?
Thanks,E
