APC Backups cs 500 went full tone / replace battery immediately upon surge

Hi,

Yesterday we had a powersurge at work.  One computer with an APC backups cs 500 went full continuous tone, red replace battery light immediately.  It didn't even TRY to provide power to the system.  Uplugged everything out the back and still, continuous tone.  Is that normal?  Has anyone else had one of these units do that?  It's like right when we needed it, it just totally gave up the ghost.

I would strongly suspect that the battery has failed, especially if the unit is more than five years old and using the original battery.
