2 units defective after an power down, plug in the surge protection only

Hi,

At my office we had an brief (few seconds) power faillure earlier this week and the results has been 2 modem defective + 1 router shake a lot (been able to make it rework after a while).
The 1 modem + the router was attach to the surge only protection from the same UPS and the other modem was on an "standard" powerbar.

I was wondering if the surge protection only in the UPS give the same protection of an standard powerbar?
Would I be more protection with the battery backup outlets?

I'm trying to understand what happend and found a fix to prevent that again.

Best regards,

Ok thank you I'll see if my superiors want to go that way or not...

I doubt it since it's only 1 * 50$ modem, protected by the UPS, that blown up... but I'll transfer them the information's to see.

Thanks for the information's.

I've got more information's from my college, I wasn't there when it happen.

It seem that an electrician came and shut down the master breaker then power up again with in a few seconds. I would suspect that it was an Spike and/or an surge that been created.

I hope this answer your questions, and thank you for the help.

Welcome to the APC Forum.

I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. Let me try to assist you with your problem by asking you a couple of questions.

- Would you happen to know the model number of your UPS?
- What was the cause of the power failure? Was it a spike, surge, blackout etc.?

Our UPS and Surge Protector are designed to protect the customers equipment to the best that it can. If the product detected that there is surge coming in, it will redirect the excess voltage back to the ground and this applies on both the surge only and battery backup outlets. If the loads that you are connecting to the UPS are critical we would suggest plugging it on the battery plus surge outlets. Also surge can also originate from the data connection such as telephone, DSL and network you need to make sure that these doors are protected from surges as well.

Thanks for the update. It would help you as well getting the information from them or from the electrician to find out what exactly happened. I suggest that you have them contact our APC Customer Care Center at 1.800.800.4272, we might need this to be filed under Equipment Protection Policy.
