Thank you Bill for all your responses!
While waiting for a response I found an article that described what you had mentioned and had just finished upgrading successfully when I received this.
Again thank you
Mike

Hi,
It is recommended to install the PCNS 4.2 Appliance (AKA VM) or install PCNS 4.2 on a standalone Windows server to manage the ESXi host.
See Application Note 180 for supported configurations.

I loaded PCNS 4.0 Appliance. I checked update and it says to upgrade to PCNS 4.2 how do I do this without losing my configuration?

Hi,
Download the version for ESXi, copy it to the PCNS VM and run the installer. It will upgrade the version of PCNS that is running.
Here is a link to the download page. http://www.apc.com/us/en/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCNS42-V
