We have a VMware vSphere6 test environment running an ESX host with 4 VMs,
two Windows 2008 servers, a Virtual Appliance with vCenter 6 and one
PCNS 4.2 Appliance. The UPS is a Smart-UPS 3000 with Management card 2, AP9630
In the shutdown configuration, the Management card has a low battery duration of 8 minutes
and a Shutdown Delay of 180 seconds, the total remaining time is about 15 min.
In the PCNS Appliance the Shutdown Events "Runtime Exceeded" and "Runtime below Threshold"
configured only.
As the UPS Power was interrupted and the remaining time was counted down,
the shutdown was triggered and the systems shut down, so far so good.
The shutdown has worked so far, but after switching the power on and after boot up
the server, a few minutes later a new unexpected shutdown of the environment took place.
In the log of the PCNS appliance the event "Runtime exceeded" was shown again
even though the UPS was reconnected to the power supply.
Is this correct that way? which measures can help prevent this.
i understand that the Battery Load is low after a shutdown but i thought
that the events "Runtime Exceeded" and "Runtime below Threshold" can only trigger,
a shutdown when the UPS is running on battery, is this wrong?
kind regards
Andreas Knopp

Yes. Runtime exceeded is triggered by the UPS not having enough runtime to sustain the load for the amount of time it will take to power everything down and in the case of VMware ESXi power it up if configured to power on VMs. See Schneider Electric FAQ FA241713
The unit does not need to be on battery for runtime exceeded to be triggered.
