i have just purchased an apc back-ups xs 900 and set it up. i tried to install the powerchute software on win 7 32 bit OS and the powerchute software does not recognize the attached xs 900. i have tried various combinations of software patches and upgrades found on the apc site including powerchute 2.0, 2.2 and 3.0, however none load/install to completion since the apc ups can not be found by the software (even though it's connected and powered on). Is there a fix for this ?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments

putting powerchute aside for a second, does windows 7 itself detect anything when you plug the UPS in? you can check device manager under batteries as well as even if it sees "unknown device" anywhere - this would be helpful to know in order diagnose the issue.

the usb does not show up on my desktop pc thru a usb port which i know to work. i also connected the usb to my notebook running win xp and it also does not show up. the cable is right out of the box, so unless it is defective, i'm not sure what to do. i have checked the rear of the ups and it rj-45 end of the cable appears to be properly plugged in. please what what to check next. thanks

ok, so neither windows or the software detects the UPS on multiple systems? if it does not even pop up as an unknown device or you dont hear any noises indicating something was plugged in, we could try another cable.
on the UPS side of things, please ensure you connected the USB data cable to the RJ-45 port labeled "data port" and didnt accidentally plug it into the port for ethernet surge protection. if you have verified that, the only other thing i would have suggested was another computer which you already did. not sure if anyone else has any ideas but you may need to contact support to try a new cable or UPS.
