serial cable not working

I have APC Back-UPS Pro 650 model # BP650SI.
I don't have original serial cable. so i bought normal serial cable and connect my UPC with computer for Power Chute Personal Edition Software.
Normally my UPS working good, but when i connect serial cable than my UPS goes off instantly. and never ON unless i dissconnect serial cable from my computer.
kindly tell me about this fault..
if cable is wrong than tell me how to make this cable myself. i already have new serial connectors.
