Hello,
Yes, you do not have to turn the UPS off to replace the batteries but please note that during the time the batteries are removed, you do not have any battery back up. If there is a power "blip" or event, the UPS will turn off. You still may not want to do it during production hours if you have frequent power outages or issues. We refer to this capability as "hot swappable" batteries.
We have some instructions here -> http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SURT10000XLI&tab=documentation
Click on the "SURT 8000/10000 VA Tower/Rack-Mount 6U 200-240 Vac - User manual for SURT 8000/10000 VA Tower/Rack-Mount 6U 200-240 Vac" link and page 13 tells you to do the reverse of "installing battery modules" which is on page 4 earlier in the guide.
It is fairly easy - your UPS will have (4) battery strings. They have a large, brown molex DC voltage connector. You unplug that and then slide them out and slide the new ones in and securely plug in the brown connector. During this time, you'll probably hear a replace battery alarm from the UPS which will be a chirping noise and replace battery LED on the front panel.
Hope that helps you!
