So I went out and bought 6 Back-UPS 650s for our Hyper-V 2012 servers (running the free "core" version) not realizing they would not be supported by PowerChute Business Edition.
Now I kinda up the creek right? Personal Edition (which would support the Back-UPS) wont run on Core and Business Edition (which does run on Core, sort of) doesnt support the Back-UPS.
Can I somehow get around this issue by running Personal Edition in a Win7 VM on each server, and have it orchestrate the graceful shutdown of its host?
The really frustrating thing is all I really care about is that the server gracefully shuts down after some amount of time on battery power. I dont need or care about all the "other stuff"
Thanks for any ideas/guidance -
Joe

Yes, PowerChute Business Edition and Smart UPS is what is geared towards server level hardware and operating systems. I've never tried to do this type of thing with a VM connected to a Back UPS so I guess it is worth a try to do what you suggested but you might run into unforeseen issues.
The only other option is configuring Windows Native support which I do not know if it is supported on that Core version you're talking about but you might want to investigate that route first because if it is supported, then you don't need to worry about the extra VM. I tend to think it is not supported just because any configuration for that thing typically requires a GUI and there is no command configuration I know of. I also found this note: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Hyper-V Server do not offer a built-in tool to manage an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) it is connected to, compared to Windows Server 2003.
Lastly, there is some information here on configuring PowerChute Personal Edition to do some scripting but I am not sure how to do it. Might be worth a search here if scripting is up your alley.
