one of my customers have smart UPS 1500 part number SAU1500. Currently it will back their systems up for around 3 and a half minutes, and i was interested in finding a solution. Can this UPS either handle a battery with a higher capacity, or a second battery?
Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the APC Forum Brad.
Unfortunately for the model that you have an SUA1500 is not capable of having another battery pack. It is not advisable as well to use a different battery on that UPS not unless recommended by APC. If you're customer is looking for additional runtime or a UPS that is capable of having an external battery pack please click on this link -- [http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=165] and then look for those UPS that are under the Extended Run category.
