I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 with redundant power supplies. PS1 went bad, but we continued to use the server. Every two weeks, the Smart-UPS 1500 would drain down, and the battery could not be recharged. This happened a couple times, with replacement batteries installed. It also happened with a different UPS connected. Last week, I replaced the defective PS1.
Is it possible for a defective server PS to damage a UPS battery? I could not find anything in google that was relevant.

i am not sure. do you have any software or network management card installed or monitoring the UPS for us to check any logs? i have heard of shorted power supplies causing problems but more along the lines of overloads. did any breakers possibly trip, thus cutting AC input to the UPS, causing it to run on battery and drain? any LEDs flashing on the front of the UPS when you had to go turn it back on? lastly, do you know how much load is normally on the UPS with your devices attached?
