I've a new SMX1500RM2U manufactured in October 2012 with firmware 9-1 installed. I've been able to work with the unit via a borrowed AP9630 but not via USB or Serial.
The USB port is working becasue, when plugging in via the USB cable, my Windows 7 x64 machine sees it and installs the driver for the device. When trying to hyperterm using the serial cable with the Win7 machine or an older XP Pro machine, I get zero, zip, nada, zilch.
Any thoughts what I am doing wrong?

Two things:
- The older SUA line of UPSes spoke UPSLink, while the newer SMX line speaks Microlink. If you're trying UPSLink commands, you won't get a response.
- The older SUA line of UPSes provided access to the NMC via the serial port on the UPS. The AP9630 isn't accessible the same way. It ships with a configuration cable that plugs into the little phono-jack. Configuration operates at 9600 baud, 8n1.
If you want to test the serial port on the SMX1500RM2U, you can configure PowerChute to communicate serially.

In hindsight, it's the new micro-link protocol that's the root of my problems.
