What is the diff between the model families?

I've exhausted my options on the website - can't seem to easily find the answer to this question. My 14-year old Smart 1000 finally died, and I'm looking to replace it. I am checking out the Smart models and note the "standard" SMT and the SC models. However, for a particular model/VA and form factor I see a pretty significant difference in runtime, but cannot tell from the detailed specs what is actually so different between them that drives the difference. I've done the "Compare Models" tool, but the differences highlighted there don't appear to be related to power available or draw.

Can anyone tell me what the basic differences are between the SC and SMT level devices that give them such a large difference in runtime?

Thanks in advance,

H.

Hi Chris, will the SMC1500 allow two computers and one data storage server to be shut down with automation?

The SC units are more of an "entry level" smart ups. Actually they were replaced by the SMC units. The SC units output a step approximated sine wave just like our back up units. These units also do not have a smart slot. The SMC units now output a pure sine save and have a LCD display on it. The SMT units output a pure sine wave, and have a better(more info) LCD display. They also have a smart slot in case you wanted to install a network management card. I would suggest the SMT1500 but if cost is a deciding factor, I would at least consider the SMC1500 as it does have the pure sine save and a better LCD(than the SC) I'm not sure if you're familiar with our network management cards but the biggest advantage of those is the ability to integrate with our software, power chute network shutdown. This will be very helpful if you have multiple servers needing to be shutdown on the same UPS. Otherwise, it's just a nice way to remotely monitor your UPS over your network(rather than usb or serial).

Please let us know if you have any questions. I have included a few links below. The FA # references a document on the step approximated sine wave and why it may affect you.

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your reply.

Most of what you listed was clear in the product documentation. What is not clear, however, is the reason for the enormous discrepancy in runtime between the SMT and SMC devices. For example, the SMT1500 lists a runtime in excess of 5 hours with a 50W load, but the SMC1500 lists well under two hours. The spec sheets for these products contain no clear difference in their electrical characteristics to indicate why this is true. Can you enlighten me?

Thank you again,

H.

The SMT1500 is a little more efficient and uses a larger amp hour battery than the SMC1500.
