What are the advantages of PCNS VM shutdown over Hyper-V guest shutdown?

Hello,

we are using PCNS 4.2 on standalone two Hyper-V hosts with no cluster. However, I don't understand the advantages of it compared to the features that Hyper-V has build in. In Hyper-V I can configure that VMs are automatically shutdown if the host is going to turn off. If the host is started, I can set up that VMs should automatically start with some delay.

PCNS give me the ability to set up a delay for the shutdown and start of VMs. Also, I saw in the script folder that PowerShell scripts are used to shutdown and start the VMs.

Is there any reason that I should those features of PCNS instead of the features of Hyper-V itself? Because if I am going to shutdown the server by myself, the VMs are going to shutdown too and start after a reboot.

Thanks!

Burak

It is your choice which you enable. PCNS has the ability to send power down commands to the VMs or you can configure the host to power down the VMs.

Why do you need to shutdown the server yourself? The reason for installing PowerChute is to allow for graceful shutdown of the system without user intervention. Depending on how you configure PowerChute it will send a shutdown signal to the VMs and they will power down. Then it will send a shutdown signal to the host and it will power down. If you decide to allow the host to power down the VM then PCNS will send shutdown signal to the host and it will send shutdown signals to the VMs.
