Recently our company network shutdown due to PCNS 4.2 issuing a command to do so. yet in reviewing the logs of the server and the UPS itself, the reason eludes us. Here is the information we have at this time:
The server running PCNS has in it's event log, an error message that stated:
The Health Service cannot connect to Active Directory to retrieve management group policy: The error is Unspecified error (0x80004005)
The UPS itself (Symmetra 100K) show nothing was wrong at the time. First thing showing up in that log was the Web User logging in to investigate. But there is no event listed, nothing.
The PCNS software event logs for the event starts w/:
645 ERROR main com.apcc.pcns.configservice.ConfigurationService. Starting PowerChute Network Shutdown, then a few lines of code about SNMP and Omaha, then the Shutdowner with InvalidState shutting down VM: *servername* reason:null
After a couple of rounds of this, the on call admin went into the software and disabled all of the power down configurations. This allowed the systems to come backup normally.
Now the server event log error and the PCNS Shutdown event occurred at the exact same time. But we are unable to understand WHY? This obviously gives us serious concern about the stability of the APC software.
PS:
Since that event, we are getting these error messages every few minutes in the PCNS software event log:
### ERROR Pool-##-thread-# com.apcc.m11.components.Shutdowner.Hosts.ESXManagedHost - Failed to take host out of maintenance mode: servername
to the tune of 130K plus entries!!

Hi,
Without seeing the PowerChute logs, the pcnsconfig.ini file, the NMC log, and the NMC config.ini I cannot say why the shutdown was started. My recommendation is to contact local support and they will review the logs and ini files and assist.
Also, you should stopping the PowerChute service, checking VirtualizationFileStore.properties to be sure it is blank and if not clear it, then restart the service.
