Unexpected shutdown of RT 10000
I tried to connect a 9 pin serial cable to the back of our Smart_UPS RT 10000
and when I turned the laptop on connected to the other end of the cable The RT 10000 shutdown and everything attatched to it. Any guesses on what happened here? There is a card in the smart slot in the back with ethernet as well as the temperature sesor connected. I was hoping to find out what IP address it was grabbing so I could monitor the temerature sensor. I figured connecting with the serial cable would be another way to do that. Instead I took down alot of critical stuff.

Hi Ennio,
All of APCs UPSs (minus maybe a couple exceptions), use a proprietary serial cable and hooking up any other serial cable can and will cause the shutdown to happen because of the non standard pin-out on the cable.
The proper serial cable should have been provided with the UPS documentation. The correct part number is 940-0024 or 940-1524 for the 15ft version. They may end in a letter such as C or D to indicate the revision as well - i.e. 940-0024D
You were right in what you wanted to do though, as long as you have the correct cable. You can get the right serial cable and assign a static IP or check the card with the correct cable to grab the IP and monitor it via the web.
The port settings are 2400 bits per second, 8 data bits, parity - none, stop bit 1, flow control - none.
