UPS not powering off after shutdown

Dear all,

we have a racked Smart-UPS SRT 5000 and we execute every year a Power Failure test to check if all servers will shutdown correctly aso. After the shutdown the UPS should power off. The last years it works without any problems but not this year. That means all servers are shutdown correctly but the UPS is running and not powering off.

We didn't change the configuration, the firmware or the software version. It is exactly the same like in the other years. We only replaced the battery before the test but I think this cannot be the reason.

Here is the protocol from 2023:

image.png

And this is the protocol from 2024 - There is no event "UPS Outlet Group: Servers turn off has been initiated"

Here is our configuration:

Does anybody knows what is wrong?

Best regards

Rainer

@RaBu78

From the screenshot, I can see that at 20:01:51, PowerChute recorded shutting down UPS 10.0.1.170. This means PowerChute sent the shutdown command to the UPS. You should check the NMC event log to see if the command was received. If it had not been received or received, and PowerChute did not receive the follow-up, it could have been a network issue.

I suggest rebooting the NMC and restarting the PowerChute service.

Note:

You could configure load shedding on the NMC, and that would trigger the PowerChute shutdown. Then the NMC will then command the UPS off. If you do configure load shedding you must deselect "Skip outlet off delay."

@BillP

thanks for your feedback. I'm missing the log-entry "UPS Outlet Group: Servers turn off has been initiated". I think that is the reason why the power off is not triggered. There are no communication issues during the power off test between the Power Chute Agent and the UPS.

I rebooted the NCM. The PowerChute service was restart with the start of the server after the power off test.

If I use load shedding what do I need to do. I want the flowwing workflow:

1. If Power off occur wait 60 seconds.

2. If  > 60 seconds start shutdown (script)

3. After 540 seconds (9 Minutes) shutdown the UPS.

That means from start power off until shutdown UPS the overall time is 10 minutes.

I would change the follwing:

1.jpg

Is this correct?

2.jpg

If I use load sheeding should I disable this shutdown event because (I think) this would be done by NCM. As you said NCM should trigger PowerChute.

3.jpg

If I use load sheeding should I change this option to "Do not turn off the UPS" because this is done by load shedding?

Thank you!

Best regards

Rainer

Hi,

If you are switching to load shedding, you should disable the UPS on battery event in the PowerChute UI and disable UPS turn-off. You must also enable load shedding for each outlet group to allow the UPS to power off before the battery is drained.

When PCNS receives the UPS/outlet group turn-off signal from the NMC, it will trigger the shutdown. The command file will be run, and then the OS will be commanded off.
