UPS input waveform

A customer has an surt1000xli ups recieving input power from an inverter. When utility power is absent unit operates on battery. Upon check the inverter has a modified waveform. I pointed out this as a reason for the ups not to recognize the inverter power but the client insists it has been working for two years n has recently developed this fault.He also challenged me to point out this issue from the units specifications for sinewave as an input source.kindly advice with technical  data if any. regards.
