I'm trying to configure a Smart-UPS RT 8000 RM XL with an AP9619 to shutdown the connected PCNS clients if the server room gets too hot or cold. Could some check what I'm doing is correct? If I set the temperature thresholds to:
Maximum: 35°C
High: 30°C
Low: 15°C
Minimum: 10°C
Hysteresis: 0°C
Will the UPS only send a shutdown command to the PCNS clients if the minimum and maximum thresholds are exceeded because they are critical events and an email will be sent if the low and high thresholds are exceeded because they are warning events?
To get the PCNS clients to actually carry out the shutdown do I need to configure a shutdown event on "Environment: Temperature Probe 1 Out Of Range" on the PCNS web interface on each server?
Is there a way to make the UPS shutdown as well if the temperature gets to hot or too cold? Is there an option in the NMC or do I have to use the "Turn off the UPS after the shutdown finishes" option on one of the connected servers to do this?
Will the UPS turn the servers back on once the temperature returns within the range of the maximum and minimum temperatures?
Thanks
Andrew

Hey Andrew:
No problem, I'll try to answer as many as you have!
1. The multiple thresholds are more for the monitoring side than the PCNS side. PCNS is only part of what a Network Management Card is used for. As an example, let's say you wanted to receive an Email on your work address when the temp reached the "High" threshold, to attempt to make you aware that the temp was a bit high; but if it reached the "Maximum" threshold, you wanted an Email directly to your cell phone, your boss, and other colleagues, to let them know the temp had gotten out of hand and requires immediate attention.
2. That's basically correct. When the UPS receives the signal from that server to turn off, it will wait that amount of time before powering down.
3. Yes. This has the same effect as if the UPS turned off due to low battery.
Hope this helps, let me know if there are any others, or if you have any followup questions!
Thanks

Hi CMFR ,
Thanks for replying, the answers you provided have been very helpful. I wonder if you or someone else could answer a couple more I have:
1. As the UPS shuts down PCNS clients on high and low temperature violations what are the minimum and maximum temperature values for?
2. I've enabled "Turn off the UPS after the shutdown finishes" on one of my servers running PCNS. Does the "Shutdown Delay" value on the UPS NMC affect this? So UPS shutdown time = server shutdown time + shutdown delay.
3.If there is a power failure and the UPS is shutdown because of the server with "Turn off the UPS after the shutdown finishes" enabled shuts down, will the UPS turn back on once power is restored?
Thanks again,
Andrew
