unfortunately, these batteries are only replaceable at the module level, not the individual cartridge level. any Symmetra Power Array accepts SYBATT battery modules and these are the modules that should have been purchased, rather than opening each SYBATT module and replacing the 7aH cartridges.
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SYBATT
beyond that, APC does not support any third party battery replacements so it will be very difficult to tell what the problem is whether with the wiring or fuse that popped in the battery module/intelligence but it is recommended that you replace the entire SYBATT casing which comes with new batteries inside.

Thank you for the suggestion, but before trying replacing the batteries as whole modules id like is somebody else has tried something different and it worked, although just as my initial thoughts were, i guess i will have to replace the whole modules.

i agree, i have seen it work before but even when it does, i dont think that those people who get it to work can still reset the intelligence of the battery to tell it that it has new modules in it. but anyways, as you mentioned, if anyone else has done this or has any other suggestions, feel free to post.

My main area of expertise is the Symmetra RM, not the original Symmetra, which is what this poster seems to have. In the RM, there is no intelligence in the battery module - it is all handled by the Main Intelligence Module. If the voltage of a newly-installed battery pack is below a certain level, the intelligence module will display the "Battery Discharged" error. Note that this is true for the batteries in the main cabinet - if there are expansion cabinets installed, there is a subordinate module in the expansion cabinet(s) which reports information about the batteries in that cabinet.
Unless a user is very familiar with the process of replacing the individual batteries, the pre-packaged battery module from APC is the best bet. While the price of non-APC replacement batteries is tempting, it is easy to get into trouble and damage the equipment (or yourself!), particularly with the 120V DC battery bus on the Symmetras.
The first thing to do when troubleshooting is to reduce the system to the minimum configuration - intelligence module, 1 power module, and one battery module. This, of course, assumes there is no load connected while troubleshooting - you wouldn't want to trigger a shutdown from overload while testing. Using a single battery module to start with is important because the battery bus is in parallel, and thus all battery modules contribute to the reading that the intelligence module sees.
If a user is going to replace the individual batteries, it is important to use the correct ones (amp-hour rating, physical size, and terminal type). The intelligence modules make certain assumptions based on the batteries that APC designed the unit with.
The normal configuration in the Symmetra RM battery (SYBT2) is to have 10 12V batteries in series, with a sense wire between the first 5 and second 5 batteries. The original Symmetra is probably similar.
I don't want to go into detailed troubleshooting procedures here because of the potential risk to people or equipment.
I have discussed the replacement of various Symmetra components on my blog: [http://www.tmk.com/blog/?s=APC]
Note that those blog entries don't contain exact procedures either, but they may be useful in a general sense.

I would recommend disabling all Power Modules (SYPM). Then go to the Status menu on the display and find the battery bus voltage.
Without the help of the power modules' charging circuits, the reading on the display will indicate the battery bus voltage. This voltage should be over 90v or the power modules will not start and charging cannot commence, thus your battery modules will be discharged over the next several days if left installed.
You may want to test each individual battery module by itself. So again, disable ALL power modules (left side SYPM), and install just one SYBATT in any of the right-side bays (R2-R5). Ensure batt voltage is over 90.
If you have battery voltage over 90, you should be able to turn on one power module. As the module's activation latch is being tightened, its fan should spin which would indicate that it is fully operational and now charging the battery system.
"Batteries Discharged" specifically means that the UPS either senses that NO good battery modules are installed, or the estimated runtime provided by the battery system is below the low-battery warning level - typically under 2 minutes.
Essentially, if you can get the power module fans to spin, you should be OK. Never leave battery modules installed in the UPS if the power modules are not spinning their fans.
