UPS: On battery power in response to distorted input.

I am not sure why I am getting this message. I have two UPSs. One connected to my windows servers and the other to my Unix server. I also have several ancillary devices connected randomly. I have had power issues with Commonwealth Edison in the past but have never been able to prove my point. Is this due to input line voltage or is it on the output side?

I have a Smart-UPS 1500: APC .60. The message appeared on both my devices. I cannot tell when the actual event occurred since it only shows 10 minute increments on the logs. I will keep an eye on it over the next few days. If it persists, I will test the line voltage on the outlet which is supplying the power to the UPS.

what is the UPS model that you have?

this indicates a problem with the UPS input voltage from the wall outlet or input feed to the UPS. if you are using a network management card, you probably want to check the data log for a record of the UPS input voltages to see if there is too high or too low of a voltage that is causing the UPS to go to battery to protect your load.

This answer does not really answer the question of what to do. What happens if voltage is too high or too low? Are there settings in the device that can be modified to tell it not to freak out when input comes in at 126v or at 115v?

@Angel.Quintanilla

It will depend on the model of your UPS. In general the UPS will have thresholds that can be set.

Output Upper Limit (High Transfer Voltage)
The upper limit of acceptable input voltage. When the input reaches this value, the UPS starts to use its AVR Trim feature or switches to battery operation if it does not have this feature.

Output Lower Limit (Low Transfer Voltage)
The lower limit of acceptable input voltage. When the input reaches this value, the UPS starts to use its AVR Boost feature or switches to battery operation if it does not have this feature.

You should check your UPS model operators manual for specific options.

I have attached a copy of the operators manual for SMT model UPS. The threshold settings are listed on page 20

Smart-UPS x 3000 keep giving me a message: "Detection of disorted input " after power gets restored.
