UPS NMC Firmware Upgrade Problems

I am having a problem upgrading the firmware on an AP9606 fitted in a Smart-UPS 1500 RM. Old firmware was AOS 3.2.1 and APP sumx 3.2.1. I am trying to upgrade to AOS 3.2.6b and APP sumx 3.2.6a. I have upgraded many of these units without an issue.

Using the upgrade program, I have installed both bits of firmware successfully on the device. However, the old AOS file is still present on the unit and it is this file, and not the new file that it is booting from.

I have also tired the ftp solution for upgrading but this still does not remove the old AOS. I have also reset the unit to defaults in case it was a config setting that was preventing the new AOS from loading.

How do I remove the old AOS or set the unit to boot from the new AOS file ??

Many thanks for any assistance.

I don't know if you can do it but have you tried the del command for one of the bin files via FTP? I have a feeling it will not work.

Otherwise, we need to find out what AOS is currently active (v3.2.1 you see when you log in you said?) and load the old 3.2.1 APP that goes with that and hopefully get it to where it was and then retry the upgrade via FTP to be safe to the new versions.

The old sumx 3.2.1 is here -> ftp://ftp.apc.com/apc/public/hardware/webcard/firmware/sumx/v321/

Thanks. Will give it a try tomorrow when i'm back in work. Some have gone through without a problem, even using the upgrade program so I don't think it's the case that there's an AOS you have to upgrade to first before installing 3.2.6. I've been updating the firmware in the hope that it improves my SNMP performance but i'm not having much luck. I have a program that polls SNMP but it seems that the APC kit, in particular the NMCs in UPSs takes a long time to respond which in itself is being flagged up by the SNMP monitoring software as a network issue. Ping times are typically 70ms to 80ms while SNMP responses can take up to 1500ms. Reading in a few forums, I'm thinking the problem is the hardware and that i'm going to have to upgrade to NMC2s if the old UPSs and Masterswitches I have will support them.

Thanks for your ongoing support and will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

Oh and I was also hoping that newer firmware would give me NTP support but that's not the case either.

Nope, AP9606 is ancient. NMC1 and NMC2 support NTP. We don't hear many SNMP connectivity issues with those devices. Masterswitches definitely will not support NMC2 but Smart UPS will. Most Masterswitches use AP9606 but a select few will work with AP9617 NMC1.

I don't know how you do it and I don't really want to know but put sumx321 back on, then tried an ftp update of both AOS and APP and it's worked.

Think i'm going to steer clear of the upgrade program and do everything ftp from now. It seems much more reliable.

Many thanks once again for your assistance and enjoy your holiday.

You won't find sumx 3.5.5 on the website because its older so it's been taken off. I'll attach the bin file here for you assuming you're fixing another card.

One last thing, where can I find sumx v3.5.5 for a AP9617 in a Smart UPS ??

Sorry but I find your support site very hard to use with respect to finding firmware, both old and new, for specific cards.

It is now 8 years since this thread was posted and all I can add is that the website download pages have apparently not been improved since.  The filters are not fit for purpose.  I also find that ftp is the only reliable way to go.  Hope you solved your problems.

Regards,

Budgie
