Hello,
I have recently purchased a Smart UPS 1500 (SUA1500). On this UPS there is both a serial and usb port. I have two Windows Server 2003 machines that I would like to shut down after the battery has been running for 15 minutes. The way I see this working is:
1) Plug the supplied serial cable into one Win 2k3 machine with the other end in the UPS (Agent, Sever, and Console installed)
2) Plug the USB cable into the other Win 2k3 machine with the other end in the same UPS (Agent only installed)
From there I use PowerChute Business Basic to set the runtime to 15 minutes on battery before performing a shutdown.
Is this correct? While testing it earlier on two machines I had a couple of problems:
1) The PowerChute Basic software (7.0.5) didn't allow me the option to set runtime in minutes. It only allowed me to shut down after one minute, or when the battery was almost dead (3 minutes left).
2) The second computer, which was plugged in via Serial, could not be found. Is this UPS designed for both ports to use two separate computers? My issue may have been originally setting it up on the host without a network connection and it appeared I could only use the IP range 127.0.0.x.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

hi,
unfortunately you can only use either USB OR serial on this UPS at a time. anytime you even plug a cable into the USB port, it actually completely kills the serial port and to regain communication on that port, you need to "braindead" the UPS.
to do that:
You need to power down all attached equipment and unplug it from the UPS. You then need to power down the UPS and unplug it from the utility power. Also, make sure that all communication cables are removed. Now, you want to hold down on the "off (o)" button until you hear an audible click (if not, proceed after 10 seconds anyway). Now, the internal circuitry of the UPS is reset, and you should be able to plug the UPS in, turn it on, and attach all your equipment.
anyway..to shutdown more than one server, you'd need to look at the following post: Referenced content removed
this is what i said on a different thread but applies here to what you are asking as well. you will need to use one of those two methods.
hope this helps.
