This Symmetra PX 20kVA UPS was installed in 2005. Last week we went to service the unit but realised someone had put in a password. The unit could not go to by-pass and could not alter any sub-menus. While the UPS was ON, one power module was pulled off the main frame, dusted and cleaned, but on pushing it back to the main frame (which was still ON), there was a short-circuit and a spark from the rear of the pwr module and and some smoke came out of the power module.
The symmetra PX UPS is supposed to have hot-swappable modules and is built for redundancy, Can someone explain the cause of this short-circuit to the pwr module and the spark? Why couldn't the frame accept the module back, Other UPSs normally accept this back due to the hot-swappable functionality.

Hi Isaac,
Any answers here would only be speculation. There is a lot of information that will need to be gathered in order to determine what caused this. Even if you do not have a support contract our 3phase phone support is still free so I would suggest calling in ASAP while having access to the unit and a computer to access the UPS. Tech support can check everything out with you and see what caused this.
