Standby instead of Shutdown?

I have APC Back-UPS RS 800 connected to Win2003 Server that has 8GB of RAM. Because of that amount of RAM, hibernate feature is not available.

I would need PowerChute Personal Edition to put computer in Standby (S3) rather than killing all processes and forcefully shutting down everything. Can this be accomplished with Personal Edition or will another version work? What about native Windows power settings?

Thanks!

Yes it will work. You will need the 940-0128 RJ-45 to 9pin serial APC cable. This will allow you to use the RS line of Back-UPS with PowerChute Business Edition in simple-signaling mode. To get the cable it may be best to check with a reseller or distributor of APC products.

PowerChute Personal does not support the use of Standby mode. From some experience with the Windows Native service with our UPS systems, I have found that the only options for OS shutdown are also Hibernate and Shutdown. This may be something you would need to check with Microsoft with for any more advanced functionality or "alternatives".

Our PowerChute Business Edition 8 Agent interface allows for the execution of a command file even when simple signaling is used (although almost no UPS data is displayed)...so if you could establish unit communication using PCBE8 (single node) you may be able to use a command file to put the computer into a standby state. APC does not provide the necessary command files for PCBE shutdown, and you would have to research this on your own.

Thank you for the detailed response!

Does PowerChute Business support Back-UPS RS? Last time I tried to use PowerChute Business I was not able to use it with Back-UPS CS, which seems to be very close to RS -series. Can you confirm that PowerChute Business works with Back-UPS RS 800?
