Recently a digger had hit a ground power wire and in our area power was off for approx one hour.
Our Smart-UPS RT 8000 RM XL had only created this event:
UPS: The output power is turned off due to a low battery.
No signal to the PCNS clients and consequently no planned shut-down behaviour has occurred.
This week-end I have tested the whole setup manually by just simply pulling out the power cord from the UPS. The intended event communication has started and all systems were properly shut-down after the configured amount of time.
Question: Why had the ups not worked as expected? What could we do to prevent hard power off event, when the UPS does not report itself the input power failure? Have we something missed?

Hi Angela,
thank you for your quick reply and help. The log files are attached. The issue has happened on
23.05.2013 14:55:49 UPS: The output power is turned off due to a low battery. 0x0114
The data log does not contain this time any more, but the event log and one of the PCNS client logs shows this time frame too. The data from the 15.06.2013 were my testing with pulling out the power cord.
Best regards
Andreas

1. We have installed new batteries this year in February,
2. The current runtime shows me 29 minutes.
3. The shutdown is configured very simple: If the UPS goes on battery due to an input power problem the the first virtual server will start to shutdown after 540 seconds and the last one after 600 seconds. (4 virtual servers in total.) Two other physical clients will shutdown after 580 seconds. Finally the HA-host for the virtual servers begins the shutdown with the last virtual server after 600 seconds. None of the PCNS clients will turn of the UPS.
4. We had shutdown all systems and UPS on June 15th for maintenance work and to install air condition into the very small server room.
BR

Hi,
i recently had the same problem. The cause were the network switches. We had a total black out in our campus, so the switches didn't have power. Then of course the shutdown procedure couldn't run as expected. Attaching the switches to the UPS, testing, and everything went fine.

Hi Bernd,
all communication hardware is also running on the UPS, modem Switches, phone system, router... Therefore the runtime is lower than in our second plant with similar load but less other hardware.

Hi Andreas Jantz - sounds strange especially if you pulled the plug/tripped a breaker to the UPS and it worked fine.
What would be most helpful is the log files from any PCNS clients as well as the management card itself. For the management card logs, can you download them and let me know the date/time to look at? Instructions are @ the knowledge base (FAQ ) and refer to article ID FA156131. For PCNS, you'll need to access your clients and just copy and paste the log to a text file as I don't think PCNS has a log export function.
