My Smart UPS 700 (over three years old) will cut power to my devices for no reason. The lights remain light on the front of the device, but the outlets are dead. No errors are indicated on the front panel or the Powerchute software log. The load light barely makes it half way, so I don't think I'm overloading it. If I turn it off and give it a rest, it may work fine for several days. Should I replace the battery even though it's not saying to, or the whole unit? And why does it cut power? I thought these things pass through power even when the battery is dead.

Hi Allan,
APC wouldn't rebuild it. Coastal Business Machines (www.cbmi.com) is responsible for all APC-Authorized UPS repairs.

Have you checked the output circuit breakers to make sure they're not tripping at all? It wouldn't cut power sporadically unless there was a problem with the wiring. Replacing the battery shouldn't have anything to do with it, so long as it doesn't exhibit this behaviour while on battery.

Interestingly, I moved the office to a new office building. The device exhibited the same behavior at both locations. In fact, the day of the move, the server shut down well before it booted - twice. That was when I decided it wasn't worth messing with and I plugged everything into the wall. I am certain something is goofy with the device, not the wiring. No wiring fault errors in the software, either. The circuit breaker on the device didn't trip. It just bothers me that the APC device would cut power - never thought it would do that.

Allan,
My apologies for not being crystal clear when talking about the output circuit breaker / wiring. I meant the wiring housed within the UPS. There was no doubt in my mind that there was nothing wrong with the site wiring, or the software would've reported differently.

Can anything be done if there's a problem with the internal wiring? I opened the front and looked at the battery connections. Otherwise I don't see anything wrong. Can APC rebuild the unti? I still think it's safer to replace the unit and forget about it.
