I inherited a site using a Smart UPS 3000 XL that doesn't appear to be switching to battery power. According to what I can get from the site contact all lights appear to show a functioning system. Battery shows fully charged, running on line power, only a single load light lit and no replace battery lit. This site has power fluctuations and the two servers connected to the UPS restart if there is a blip and when I had the contact do a self-test, the UPS shut down.
I do not know when the batteries were replaced, if ever, and I can replace the battery pack. Just wanted to see if anything else might be wrong or something else I can have them check before ordering a battery pack and making the trip to the site. I'm thinking that even though the system shows fully charged, that doesn't necessarily mean the batteries can handle the load when line power drops so the batteries could still be bad. Thanks

Thanks! I will have to get to the site in the next couple of days to get more info. I just started and they just recently acquired this location so I know nothing of the history. I do know that when they lose power, even for a split second, anything connected to the UPS restarts, as if it was directly connected to a power strip and you turned it off momentarily They have power issues and from what I can gather, it was working fine up to a month or so ago. Meaning, when they had a short power outage, the servers stayed up. When I had a person do the self-test ( I think he did it right), everything immediately restarted as if it wasn't transferring to battery. There are two servers connected and a router and as far as I can tell, it all resets. I don't think there is a management card or if there is it's not hooked up. I will have them check that for me. I also might shut the servers down and have them move the plugs to different outlets just to rule that out although I can't imagine 2-3 outlets being bad.
I'll just have to get out there and do some more troubleshooting. Based on information from them, the system has been in place for 4-5 years and as far as anyone knows, there has never been any changes to it. Thanks again for the tips and I will check that stuff as soon as I can get to it, it's far enough away that it's basically an all day trip for me.

i would definitely recommend doing a pull plug test or tripping the upstream breaker on the UPS and seeing what happens. a pull plug test would be to pull the plug from the wall with an attached load to see what happens. you might want to take the critical load off and put something else on the UPS incase it does turn off. also, is ALL of the attached load rebooting or some of it. do you have a network management card log available for the UPS or powerchute business edition log? these could be very helpful. lastly, when the servers turn off, does the UPS turn off too? this issue does not scream "new battery" to me so we might want to see what else we can find out before you buy a battery. it especially does not seem like a "new battery" issue if the servers reboot versus turn off so you might want to double check to make sure it is a restart versus turn off. has this set up ever worked properly?
i forgot to mention that it would be worth while to have someone check serial numbers on the UPS and battery if available. the age could really help too along with the other questions i asked.
