A SmartConnect UPS is designed to be accessed through the cloud. It does not have an interface for direct connection via LAN. You will find more information on the cloud and how to access the UPS via the cloud at SmartConnect.apc.com
If access via LAN is required you can install a network management card. Available cards for SMT Smart-UPS will be found on this web page.

I have a SMC1500C, and i made the infamous mistake of plugging in the wrong type of serial cable and caused it to shut off. It had a long uptime, and now it is back on, battery detected and able to hold a load. However now I'm skeptical: nic port doesnt seem to beacon and send signal out. I know I cannot lan scan but anyway to tell if NIC is fried?

I would start by following this APC FAQ to reset the Smart Connect NIC:
