Smart-UPS 1500 XLM aka SUM1500RMXLI2U overload problem with no load....

This was originally posted on APC forums on 9/5/2012

Hi, i'm new to ups diagnostics 🙂 and this is my first problem. I will try to explain the problem brief but complete and supply with enough information.

The ups has been bought 2nd hand as a try-out for my new home business. It has feeded my dual socket server for almost a year. It has a date of 2006 and the original batteries are still being used (see pictures). I don't mind replacing the batteries ..... if that is needed to be done.

problem: It does not start. If i power the ups, it will start with the self test. Here the "online" led will go on first, followed by a blinking "on battery" led going over to a red non-blinking "overload" led with a disgusting background sound. So i switch it of to stop the sound. The ups is partly on but no green lights. he 2 fans are on and i can connect to the ups hence the supplied pictures. No hardware is connected to the ups , so no load....

i tried: brain dead option, removed the battery connection inside and connected again, nothing helped.

Info:
ups model: smart-ups 1500 xlm
serial number: QS0645320159
manufacture date: 23-9-2006
firmware rev: 716.3.1
battery replaced: 23-9-2006

ups status: unknown
internal temp: 24,7 C / 76,5 F
output voltage: 0 vac
input voltage: 227,5 vac
output freq: 50 hz
load power: 3,9 % va
load current: 0 A

battery status: Normal
battery voltage: 54,54 VDC
Runtime remaining: 205 min
battery replaced: 23-9-2006
battery pack count: 0
battery charge: 99%

ups self-test
last self test: 4-9-2012
result: failed

ups-calibration: unable to do this...
cal. date: unknown
cal. result: unknown

Can someone help me diagnose the problem?
Is there something like a fuse?
Thanks in advance...

The XLM model allows removal of the inverter/charger/controller module (right side of ups om rack mount orientation) ....if you remove the screws on the front (philips screwdriver) flip over the little tab lever at the bottom left you can pull out the module. Have you tried that step to refresh the electrical connections between the module and the ups cabinet (frame) ?

Hi! Are you sure that its the Overload LED that's lit? Because if it is, it may indicate an internal fault (that is if there is no load attached). If it's not, and it is the Replace Battery LED (the one that looks like a battery with an "X" inside it) that is lit solid and accompanied by rapid beeping after the selftest then it's just the batteries that need to be replaced.
[You can get the batteries here|http://www.apc.com/tools/upgrade_selector/index.cfm]

also, are you using both powerchute business edition AND a network management card? i ask because you are showing screenshots of the PCBE interfaces and then you show a screenshot of putty which is a network management card screen (since this UPS comes pre-installed with one). you should only be using one or the other technically so if I had to suggest one, it should be the network management card.

I would disconnect the serial cable and either terminal in or web in to the network management card to set it up and i need to review the logs in there which would be extremely helpful in diagnosing this issue with you.

here are some knowledge base articles to help you:

• How to set up the network management card with an IP address: http://www.apc.com/support/index?page=content&id=FA156064

• How to download the event.txt, data.txt, and config.ini (which I'd like to see - feel free to remove any private info): http://www.apc.com/support/index?page=content&id=FA156131

if you can post those logs here, it should help greatly.
