Hi,
We have two (2) Dell 2950 III running ESXi 3.5 U4 connected to two (2) APC switched AP7940 PDUs which are in turn connected to an 8 KVA APC UPS with a AP9619 card.
My to install APC PCNS on the VMs (7 on each host for a total of 14) so that the UPS can shut them down gracefully in event of a power failure. The next step is to shut down the ESXi by having one of the VMs, possibly a VIMA machine, run a script to shut off the outlets on the PDUs that the hosts are plugged in to.
Does anyone have any recommendations for doing this? (eg script language VBS vs Perl) Or has any one already done it or something similar and can share their experience.
Thanks for any assistance.
Mac

I used APC PCNS to shutdown the VMs after 10 minutes. There is a physical management server that runs a script that powers down the ESXi hosts via IPMI after 15 minutes and then the server powers down. The installation and configuration of PCNS on the VMs was tedious but it works and was cleaner than shutting off the PDU outlets. Hopefully, this can help someone else

In [this apc-forums thread|http://forums.apc.com/spaces/5/smart-ups-symmetra-lx-rm/forums/general/5382/batteries-inflated-now-i...] rstellhorn has set up a scripted PDU shutdown initiated by PCNS.
