Shutdown setting powers computer off

I have Powerchute 7.0.5 installed on several machines. All are running XP Pro x64 edition with all of the latest patches. They are all set to shutdown type "Shutdown". However when the shutdown process is completed the computers power themselves off rather than staying on. Has anyone else seen this behavior and / or know how to fix it?

Hi,

I've come across this before, and it seems to have to do with the BIOS. Is the BIOS actually cable of going to a shutdown screen that says "It is now safe to turn off your computer"? I would contact the BIOS/PC manufacturer to see what they may have to say. If that option is not available, it makes no difference if you select Shutdown or Shutdown & Off as both will accomplish the same thing. Obviously if that option is available, you would want to get to Shutdown and not a total power off.

So what kind of BIOS setting would I be looking for? I have seen many PCs that have a setting that in effect says, what state should I return to after a power outage. The choices usually are "on", "off" and "last". I see the behavior I described in my first post whether the BIOS has this setting or not. The behavior also remains regardless of the setting on a machine that does have this setting.

After a bit of research, I found that there was a registry entry documented here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/regentry/12324.mspx?mfr=true

This entry does exist on all of the machines that I see the problem on however it has no effect. This feels like either something that can be changed in Powerchute or something that can be changed in windows itself independent of whether a BIOS setting exists and / or what that BIOS setting is set to. Anyone have any other ideas?

i also found this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819760

but you said you have the latest patches, etc

Here is also a k-base article that describes some of the stuff you are already aware of:

[Click here to view|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1003]

Powerchute/network management cards only have settings pertaining to the UPSs behavior when power returns, rather than the load attached.

The group policy setting and the registry key that it modifies fixes this problem. Its puzzling to me that the Powerchute installer doesn't make this registry entry for you. It seems like there isn't a modern machine out there that wouldn't need this setting. The help text for the group policy setting says it all:

This setting allows you to configure whether power is automatically turned off when Windows shutdown completes. This setting does not effect Windows shutdown behavior when shutdown is manually selected using the Start menu or Task Manager user interfaces. Applications such as UPS software may rely on Windows shutdown behavior.

This setting is only applicable when Windows shutdown is initiated by software programs invoking the Windows programming interfaces ExitWindowsEx() or InitiateSystemShutdown().

If you enable this setting, the computer system will be safely shutdown, and remain in a powered state, ready for power to be safely removed.
If you disable or do not configure this setting, the computer system will safely shutdown to a fully powered-off state.

Thanks for your help!
