My company recently purchased a batch of new Smart-UPS APC UPS 1000 battery backups from a third party vendor. All of the units were fully discharged out of the box and required a recharge before they were ready for deployment. Once the units were charge I noticed in the Log file that the last dated entry was from 2001. If these batteries did in fact leave the manufacturer in 2001 is it possible they are defective or damaged by now?

If all of these Smart-UPS models are on your network via the network management cards they have installed, you can get each unit's serial number remotely.
Otherwise, the serial number -- which does encode the UPS' manufacture date -- is always available via the white barcode sticker on the physical unit's chassis.

Mark,
Before there's any addition comments from myself or any other moderators on here, can you provide a serial number that was on the Test Slip? If the UPS says that the last time the batt was replaced was 2001, I doubt that the units your company received from a third-party supplier could be deemed "new".
Thx

Ok thanks for the answers. The batteries in question have all been deployed in the field so i do not have the testing slips here but I will know to use the slips in the future. The defalut date on the managament card makes sense as well. Is there a tool on APC's website to determine battery manufacture date from the serial number on the slip? Once I have that date what kind of shelf life should I consider to long or unacceptable?
