ok, before posting this question i did some research on this forum and some says it can be done and some say it can't.
Here's what my question is. i have ups's smart ups 2200RM rack mounted, they both have built in serial ports and later added NMC's (in the smartslot). NMC's are functional and i've alreadey set them working with PCNS. But, there's one server which is in DMZ and we don't want to open all those required ports on the firewall and so on. So i was thinking of connecting that web server to one of those UPS's via serial cable and install business edition of powerchute for it. will this configuration work? if not do you guys have any suggestions how it could be set ? besides getting separate ups for the web server.
thanks in advance.

sorry, i was waiting for someone to get back to me and they did not so i rechecked.
APC's stance on this is that on those particular UPS models, there is nothing in the design that prevents this from working, but it is not part of our testing matrix, and we do not know what issues would be encountered. For the lowest liklihood of issues, we'd recommend that you use the serial port in simple signaling mode (versus smart) and to do this, you could just select the basic signaling shutdown is selected in the network management card interface, which i believe is right near the options to set shutdown delays, low battery duration, etc.
hope that helps.

so, in other words i can do this, but i have to set serial port to operate in simple mode, while i can have NMC set up to do the graceful shutdown via PCNS on other servers ?
simple mode means i can't use powerchute business edition or something else? i am little bit confused.
thanks .

yes.also, simple mode means that the UPS can talk to the powerchute client or native OS client. it can tell the client, by putting voltage on the serial pins, when it is on battery, it has a low battery, or that the UPS turned off. so you dont have that two way communication for changing settings, etc which would hopefully be OK since you can do all of that on the management card anyway. also, you need to make sure you get a simple signaling cable if you choose to pursue doing it.

i think i am getting it now :). so settings that is set on the NMC (low voltage, shutdown etc) will affect that serial port as well (it will send shutdown signal when needed) and all i need is to install powerchute business edition client on the web-server and connect it to the ups via simple serial cable (which is this one -- 940-0020) to setup simple communication between the two.
am i correct ?
thank you.

thank you, i did everything the way you said and it worked like a charm. NMC clients are fine and serial port can communicate with web server via simple signaling cable, although there's not much to manage but at least i can set shutdown sequence and let the ups shut it down when needed.
Great Job ! thank you.
