Hi Guys, Following a scheduled self test on an APC Smart 3000 RM 2700W UPS last week I started getting admin emails telling me the device was switched off. I managed to start it again via the managment card however when a self test is run the device will keep switching off and the Web interface says outputs disabled. I have a number of these units and its only one it happens to. To me this says its a fault but I am wondering if its something that I can prevent without replacing the unit? Any words from the wise would be welcome.
Thanks
Bob

Bob,
The unit should not turn off after a Self test when it is plugged in. If the UPS passes the Self-Test, the green On Line indicator will be lit and solid. If it fails the test, the red Replace Battery indicator will be lit as well as the green On Line LED.
I would like to gather some more details from you to find out what has caused the UPS to turn off power to its outlets. Was the UPS receiving input power when the unit initiated the Self test? How old Is the battery in the unit? If possible, could you please perform the self test again when the input power is present and check the test result? What lights are on the front of the UPS? If possible, could you please post the event and data logs which was recorded by the NMC before and after the Self test?

Hi, Thanks for replying.
The unit was receiving input power, the battery is around 2.5 years old and no lights where on when the unit powered off even the replace battery indicator was not showing. We did manually run the self test and get the same results and I can confirm that power was available. I did this on site so I could actually see the device and there were no alarms stating that the device had gone onto battery.
Here are the logs:
11/21/2009 08:53:26 UPS: Turned off.
11/21/2009 08:53:24 UPS: Self-test initiated.
The Management card Web interface then shows the warning power outlets disabled.

Bob,
This is an abnormal operation of the UPS. Here is what the unit should do when you perform the manual Self test by pressing and holding the on/Test button until you hear two "chirps". After pressing the button, you will observe the following events:
1. The green On Line indicator will flash.
2. The yellow On Battery indicator will light while the battery test is performed.
If the UPS passes the Self-Test, the green On Line indicator will be lit and solid. If it fails the test, the red Replace Battery indicator will be lit as well as the green On Line LED.
However, the UPS should not power off after the self test. Do you have any other Identical UPS with good known batteries? If so, please swap the batteries and check if the same problem persists. This will help us to determine if the issue lies with the UPS circuitry or the batteries in the unit.
