I recently purchased a used SURTD3000XLI and tried commisioning the unit today. Powered it up and it started clicking rapidly. No lights are visable on the front panel and this with no load applied to the ups. It also tripped my earth leakage breaker at the mains board. I had to pull the one battery lead out to stop the clicking relay. Please advise. the unit is still under warranty till March 2012.

Hi Warren,
Let us start by making sure that the internal batteries are properly connected. Then make sure that the required voltage is provided with the correct wiring. When did it tripped the breaker? Did it tripped the moment you plug the UPS or when you turned it on? See if this would help, while the UPS is off and unplugged press and hold the I/Test button. While holding the button you'll hear a short and a long beep. As soon as you hear the long beep, release the button. This should power up the UPS on battery.

Did anyone ever find a solution to this? I have the same model, showing the same symptoms on startup. The batteries are at 208v at rest but when test button is pushed, the voltage drops to 70v, the fan spins intermittently as a relay clicks on and off.
When AC is applied the same thing happens ( battery voltage drops ), and the circuit breaker at the switchboard trips.
The batteries recover within seconds to 208v. when either the test button is released or AC is disconnected. Any ideas?
Colin.

I understand from either knowledge base article FA156604 and previous posts to the forum that at least 85 volts per battery module (170 across the pair) in an Smart-UPS RT (those which use RBC44) is required in order for it to start up. Anything less and it will exhibit the clicking and "flapping" behavior you are likely seeing.

Thanks for that Battman.
As mentioned, the batteries have 208v across the pair until the test button is pressed or AC is applied, when it drops to 70v ( across the pair ) . I am trying to find out if this is likely to be a battery problem or a hardware fault.
Regards, Colin
