SURT3000XLI Internal Fault

Dear all,

I am facing internal fault problem with SURT3000XLI.

Whenever the UPS is powered ON it shows Internal Fault red LED & one battery charge indicator LED (green colored on extreme bottom LED).

What is the meaning of this code? Could you please tell me about the failed part from this error code, so that i can buy & replace.

HI,

Can you just cold start this UPS and see whether the "internal fault light" comes on ? . If No, then you may need to check your incoming connections and settings to ensure that it is correct. If the UPS cannot be cold start, then there could be an internal fault with the UPS itself and if it is under APC warranty, you are entitled for a unit replacement.

To cold start the UPS,

Press and hold the "On/Test" button of the UPS until you hear a long beeping sound. Upon hearing this , release the button and wait for the UPS to do a self-test. The Leds that should be on are the "On-battery" led and your battery capacity Leds. No other Leds should be on during this test.

Note: The Online Led ( green color ) will be flashing/ blinking during the self-test period but after that, it should go off.

I have also problems with this said, try to boot, tak tak ventilated and try to rotate, the intention of the battery is ok, I put the multimeter on the output of the batteries and 218 volt mark, but at the botom press lever test, the retention drops at 96 the same thing happens if I connect to the mains.
the only way to get it to boot is bridging the batteries, I delivered a retention of 100 volts, so it starts and then the multimeter comiensa intention to make that up, I pull the Muente and there andar.quedando comiensa to all the batteries connected .
but powering it all starts again.

Hi All,

I have a SURT3000XLI with the external battery pack that was working 2 years ago. My client hasn’t used it in the last year, I decided to test it and try and use it. But when I plug in the main power and press the ON button nothing happens.

If the batteries are stone cold dead, will the UPS start up at all? Or even will it show any sign of power going through the UPS?

If it is the batteries, will I need purchase all 16 for both banks? Or can I use 1 bank to test?

Further to this, not sure if possible. But will I be able to connect this UPS with deep cycle batteries?

If someone could assist me, would really appreciate it.

Hi Clemy,

If the batteries are lower than some minimum voltage (I recall reading that it is something around 180 volts), the UPS will not power on, even with good Mains power. Have you confirmed the batteries are, as you say "stone, cold dead" with a voltmeter, and that both battery connectors are securely plugged in? Also, unfortunately, I don't believe the batteries will be able to be charged by the UPS unless they have at least the minimum voltage to start.

If the batteries were left connected for the year that the unit wasn't used, and I assume not connected to Mains power, they are probably unrecoverable, and strings (or banks of 2 modules) you replace should be replaced as a full set of 16. The UPS has 2 internal battery modules and an external battery pack has 4 more modules. The UPS requires 2 modules (or a "string" of 16 batteries) to operate, so you could replace and connect ONLY the 2 internal modules (be sure the old, dead external batteries are disconnceted) to confirm operation of the UPS although it wiil have a shortened run time in this state.

When I tested a few batteries with a voltmeter, they showed 2.5V. I assume this is to low?

The internal batteries were connected for the year with no Mains power.  The external pack was not connected at this time.

Do you know if there is a way to connect Deep Cycles batteries onto this UPS? So instead of purchasing 16 batteries I can get 2 maybe deep cycle batteries?

Just to confirm, if the batteries are unrecoverable the UPS will not start up or show any indication of power of LEDs?

This model UPS needs 2 modules, each module providing about 96 volts, for the UPS to show any signs of life.

Each of the individual batteries within a module should read about 12 volts, so yes, any that read 2.5 volts are probably useless by now (please recycle!). If the external batteries were disconnected, you should check the voltage at the connectors that would plug into the main UPS unit. Each of those connectors should read close to 92 - 96 volts if the batteries have any life left, as they might since they have been disconnected for the past year. If you find 2 modules in the external battery cabinet with a voltage in this range, you could use them to try operating the UPS.

If you want to try being creative and substituting non-standard batteries, ANY arrangement of batteries will need to add up to 96 volts at the connector from the module that plugs into the UPS, so for 12 volt batteries (the most common type you can buy), you will need 8 batteries wired "in series" to produce the 96 volts needed, and you will need 2 of those arrangements connected to the UPS to replace the 2 original battery modules for the UPS to operate. I can't imagine there are any 96 volt batteries for sale that would allow you to buy only 2... Please also keep in mind there are potentially very dangerous voltages and currents produced by these modules or any configuration you create to replace a module, so be extremely careful!
