We have an Older SUA1500 with an AP9606 Card that is used in a Home Theater room that is ideal because it's silent with no fan or noise.. The First problem we have is we cannot get the DHCP server to automatically assign an IP to the AP9606 card... when we try the "serial RJ45 cable" (RJ45 Serial into UPS and 9pin serial to PC) all modern PC's don't have this physical 9-pin Serial connectors (even if they did I'm not sure Windows10 64bit has X-modem /hyper terminal 9600bps software anymore) - 1st Question does the SUA1500 Support the new AP9630 Card for auto assign IP from DHCP on this model like it does with newer models) 2) does the SMT1500 provide the same or enhanced Power stats over the SUA1500?
We have thought about upgrading to the SMT1500 with the newer LCD - as I've been told the newer UPS would support firmware upgrades via the APC9630 Card Problem is we have read in this group dozens of complaints of "Fan Noise problems" with the SMT1500 - that APC Released Firmware updates to slow down the RPM speed of the fans to try and reduce the problem 1) is the fan noise still an issue with this model ? 2) can you turn off the fan completely via Firmware, adjust the RPM... or what was the RPM speed of the fans when the product first shipped.. & how much was it lowered in the latest firmware?

So, in addition to what Gareth said:
1) Echoing what Gareth said, USB-to-RS232 converters are cheap and work well.
2) If the AP9606 isn't obtaining a DHCP lease, you might have to disable the "APC Cookie" option on the NMC. It's off by default on the AP9630. The AP9630's networking functions the same no matter which UPS you put it in. See http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156110/
3) I'm not sure which power stats you're looking for, but in general the newer models provide more information than the older models. I'm not aware of any cases where newer models report less through the NMC.
4) In my opinion, you have to assume an APC UPS will use the fan. The airflow cools the battery and allows for more accurate temperature sensing.

I modded my old unit with a quieter fan but it was still louder than my very quiet water cooled pc. The HP Gen8 microserver was louder than the modded UPS. I used the mid speed 24v maglev fan but you can get a lower speed one that should be more what you need.
Problem is now fixed, I moved the UPS into the cupboard under the stairs and ran the cable under the floor boards to the sockets that power the PC equipment.
So no it isn't that quiet.
Now you can get very cheap USB to Serial adapters and you can download hyperterminal still http://hyperterminal-private-edition-htpe.en.softonic.com/
Could you set a fixed IP in the router for now tied to the mac address?
