Hello! Recently the batteries in my Smart-UPS appear to have gone bad. The UPS stinks of sulpher so I Immediately shut it down and disconnected the battery connection. When in specting the batteries a few appear to be bulging so that confirmed that they have gone bad. My question is, am I able to just install a replacement battery and fire it back up? Or if this happens does the whole unit need replacement? Thanks.

Thank you for the in depth response. I do not believe there was any leaking acid, I will take a closer look. The UPS was new when I installed it, so unless it sat on a shelf somewhere for a long time, I estimate the batteries to be around 43 months old. Currently the unit resides at the bottom position of an open, wall mounted rack, so it should have a decent amount of airflow around it, There is however a server mounted right on top of it so that probably increases the internal temperature of the UPS.
